On April 9, 2021, at a meeting held in the office of the President of Serbia, attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Novi Sad Mayor Milos Vucevic and Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Takahiko Katsumata, it was announced that the Japanese engine-building corporation Nidec would build two of its factories in the city. On the same day, Nidec completed the signing of a strategic alliance agreement with the University of Novi Sad aimed at technology exchange through partnerships between the industry and the academic community, as well as the development of promising motors and power electronics for electric vehicles.

According to the signed agreements, #nidec will build two factories in Novi Sad. The first plant will operate as a local subsidiary of Nidek Electromotor Serbia LLC. Its functions include the production and sale of automotive engines and related products. It will be located on an area of 59,760 m2. The start of construction is scheduled for September 2021, and its commissioning in mid-2022. The staff of the plant will be 1000 people.
The second plant is Nydek Elesis Europe LLC. Its facilities will produce inverters and engine control units for electric vehicles. The area of the plant will be 36,000 m2, and the staff is 200 people. Like the first plant, it should also be operational in mid-2022.
Nidec intends to take a leading position in the segment of production of power components for electric vehicles. According to Nidec CEO Shigenobu Nagamori, the company intends to «dominate the electric vehicle engine market.» In concrete terms, Nidec plans to hold a quarter of the market by 2025 and 40 to 45 percent by 2030. The company plans to produce 5 million electric vehicle motors and power electronics kits by 2025. The company already has operating factories in Japan, China, and other parts of the world. Now they have decided to gain a foothold in the European market and get closer to potential buyers — car manufacturers.
Nidec is even aiming to surpass #tesla in electric motor production by supplying components for the budget electric vehicle segment. Potential customers include electric vehicle manufacturers such as China #mini ev, which #gm makes in Wuling, and which an Eastern European distributor recently decided to bring to Europe. It may be that one of the future customers for the products of the Serbian Nidec factories will be # Volkswagen, in the corridors of which there are talks about the creation of an entry-level budget electric vehicle ID.2.
