Astypalea Island, located in the Aegean Sea, has begun its transformation into a smart and sustainable island. It will become the first territory in the world on Earth where there will be no hydrocarbon energy and internal combustion engines of transport.

In early June, on the Greek island of Astypalea, the implementation of an almost fantastic project-experiment began,

On June 2nd, the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the head of Volkswagen Herbert Diss gave a ceremonial start to this program. The transformation of Astypalea into a fully decarbonized area will take five years. And this should show the path that the whole of Europe will travel in the next three decades.

As part of its part of the work, # Volkswagen delivered electric VW ID.4 SUVs to the local police station on the island,

In the next phase, the Volkswagen Group will provide island car sharing and kicksharing. In parallel with this, clean energy solutions from #man SE will be commissioned. In addition to solar power plants and offshore wind farms on the island will be installed

After the transformation, both the inhabitants of the island and the tourists who visit it will enjoy the nature itself, the sea, and no rattling and exhaust from cars or diesel generators.
